Joe Matzzie has
been involved with music his entire life, with marked diversity and
enthusiasm. He has played the role of composer,
conductor, arranger, multiinstrumentalist, producer, teacher,
transcriptionist,
band leader, stage hand, and radio DJ. He founded the record label U.S.Records,
the publishing company There's Been
A Publishing (ASCAP), and the recording studio City Mouse
Recording Studio. His songs have appeared on the Discovery
Channel show Outward
Bound and on college radio stations throughout the
northeast United States.
Matzzie began playing guitar at the age of 5, taking lessons at the
Jewish Community Center in Pittsburgh, PA. Soon after he began playing
Trumpet and
Viola, in order to participate in the school music
programs. His first paying gig on the guitar was at a renewal of
vowels ceremony, at the age of 10. Through high school his passion for
the guitar grew, as he became increasingly obsessed with the
Beatles music, in particular soaking in their lyrics and song
structures. In high school he began writing songs and playing in bands.
Matzzie moved to New York City in February 1993, after having earned a
bachelor degree in Classical Guitar Performance from Duquesne
University. There he began recording demos and formed the alternative
rock band Joe Matzzie Beyond Belief. At the same time his Classical
Guitar training led him towards playing music for Shakespeare plays
around the New York and New Jersey area, as well as playing
Renaissance, Medieval, Middle Eastern, and Celtic music at Renaissance
Faires and events. Out of the positive experience of arranging
Renaissance-era music for live theater, and the desire to participate
in the music making process on a deeper level, Matzzie enrolled in the
Film
Scoring Department at Berklee College of Music in 2005 and was awarded
the Berklee Acheivement Scholarship. There he studied orchestration,
synthesis, advanced film music editing,
and of course dramatic Scoring for Film & TV.
In December of 2008 Joe moved to Los Angeles and is currently working as a freelance music producer.
